About ASL

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete language that consists of hand signs, gestures, facial expressions and body posture to create words and sentences.  It is a visual language that allows users to communicate other than verbally.

I get asked a lot of questions!  Here are some answers to ones that people ask me all the time.

Is sign language the same here and in other countries around the world?

No one form of sign language is universal. For example, British Sign Language (BSL) differs notably from American Sign Language (ASL). Different sign languages are used in different countries or regions.  Signs can vary in the United States since different regions can have different dialects or variations of a sign.
